What is low level laser therapy and how it works…

Who is low level laser therapy for?

If you are conscious about a skin condition, aging, or an injury and are looking for a non invasive, cost effective and more natural way to get improve your condition then low level laser therapy is the treatment for you! Carry on reading for further information on how it works.

Low level laser therapy can be used to treat a wide range of health and cosmetic conditions. It is a non invasive and pain free treatment that helps the body to naturally heal itself through the use of light of varying frequencies depending on what is being treated.

The treatment works by exposing the cells to energy in the form of light that can work to boost the body’s ability to repair itself at a cellular level. It can also work as an inhibitor to control conditions like eczema and psoriasis where the cells are over producing skin cells causing the inflamation.

The range of conditions that I treat are:

– Stretch marks

– Fine lines/wrinkles

– Skin rejuvenation from sun damage

– wound healing

– Post operative healing

– Eczema/psoriasis

– Muscle strains/Sprains

– Sports injuries

– Diabetic wound healing support

– Gout

– Fracture healing

– Rosacea

– Soft tissue injuries

Low level laser (light) therapy is a rapidly growing method to treat a wide variety of conditions that need the cells in the body to gain energy to promote healing, pain relief, restore of function and decrease inflammation. The skin is the part of the body that is exposed to light more than any other organ. However, it still reacts well to red and near infrared wavelengths. The light (photons) are absorbed into the energy carrying part of the cells (mitochondria) . This energy improves the function of the cells and therefore improves circulation which results in bringing more blood and nutrients to your skin enabling it to heal more efficiently.

The laser light penetrates the skin 1cm to the endodermis. The mitochondria absorbs the light energy and is energised (essentially jump starting the cells metabolism…) consequently blood flow and oxygen increase in the cells. Stem cells can also be activated, allowing increased tissue repair and healing; and making them act like younger cells…the effects of increased cell reproduction and blood circulation is more collagen and elastin bundling between the cells, leading to reduced wrinkles and faster healing times…skin will typically appear plumper and healthier looking within 2-12weeks….

If your skin needs healing (from acne, acne scars, eczema, sun damage, redness etc.) – then the skin will heal, naturally and faster.

If it is already healthy, you will get a plumping effect, along with skin tightening, wrinkle reduction and a toned, radiant skin.

Therefore, in dermatology low level laser has benefits when treating wrinkles, acne scars, hypertrophic scars, healing of burns and stretch marks. It can also reduce UV damage from sun exposure after holidays, or as a preventative to reduce the UV damage before sun exposure. It can also treat inflammatory conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and acne.

There are plenty of studies that support the rejuvenating effect of low level laser study on the skin. One study concluded,

“After a 12 week follow up, 91% of the people involved reported improved skin tone, and 82% reported enhanced smoothness of skin in the treatment area.”

“A statistically significant improvement in wrinkles was seen after profilometric analysis. The majority of the people involved confirmed improvements in softness, smoothness, and firmness at all time points. Electron microscopic analysis showed evidence of post-LED treatment of thicker collagen fibers proving the ability of the laser to improve the production and restoration of collagen.”

The treatment we offer as part of our skin rejuvenation programme is twofold. Firstly, part of your treatment will involve reflecting on diet and nutrition and what you can do to improve your skins health. Secondly, the use of low level laser will be used to rejuvenate the skin at a cellular level.

Using laser light therapy to treat your acne prevents scar tissue from forming in the first place.

Even if you already have scars from acne, red light therapy can help fade them.

As new collagen is formed, the pockmarks often left by severe cases of acne even out and reduce the appearance of acne scarring.

Studies have shown that after ten weeks of twice weekly treatments resulted in a significant reduction of acne lesions.

The antiinflammatory properties of laser therapy and its ability to reduce over secretion of the sebaceous glands make it an ideal healing modality in the treatment of acne where other topical treatments have failed.

Low level laser therapy can be used to help repair fractures and broken bones. Some of the key benefits of using laser therapy on bone injuries are:

It can prevent arthritis later on in life

It prevents the chance of calcification and bone spurs developing as a result of the break.

Speed up the healing process.
